Project-Based Learning

PBL stands for Project-Based Learning. 

At Scottsburg New Tech High School, PBL is incorporated into the student’s everyday class agenda. Through PBL, the student will test their skills in School Wide Learning Outcomes (SWLO). These outcomes include Communication, Professionalism, Technology Literacy, Knowledge and Thinking, and Collaborative Skills. Each outcome will have a different percentage of your grade, and each percentage will vary on the project and class. Each project is done in groups of two more depending on the project. Students are responsible for their time management during a project. Group contracts are created in order to keep work ethic balanced and productive throughout the group members. Naturally, student’s will still have homework, but the day’s work is generally done during class in PBL format. Depending on how the group decides to cooperate, all work may be done in class, or a balance of both class and homework.
Here are the basic components of a PBL project:
  • The project will start with a Project Roll Out.
    • A Project Roll Out is what the instructors provide the students with in order to explain the project’s purpose.
    • The Roll Out can vary on how the instructor creatively plans to get the purpose across.
    • It can be any form of media or hands-on activity or template.
  • The Roll Out is supported by a Driving Question.
    • The Driving Question guides the students to what their project needs to incorporate.
    • Each project’s purpose is to answer the Driving Question.
  • All groups are required to fill out a Group Contract.
    • Group Contracts contain the student’s contact information, skill sets, roles in the project, as well as rules of the group’s work ethics.
    • The rule section of a group contract allows the group to have the means of firing a member who is unresponsive to the group’s efforts during the project.
    • Each Group Contract is required to be turned in and reviewed by the instructor before beginning the project.
  • Every Project requires a Rubric.
    • The Project Rubric provides the student with a list of criteria that the project will be graded upon.
    • Each Rubric is different depending on the project.
  • During a project instructors may create Work Shops for the student’s needs.
    • Work Shops are intended to inform the students of any media bases or extra tips needed to complete the project.
    • Work Shops may also aid the students in their search for the right information concerning the project and may guide them towards the right direction.
  • At the end of a project students will present their Final Product Presentation.
    • In some cases, students may have the ability to pick their desired format of the project presentation (Ex: Movie, skit, Keynote/Prezi, Web Site, etc.)
    • Depending on the project, students may be required to present the product in one form, or multiple.
    • During the presentation students are given a Professionalism grade based on their dress.
    • Each Teacher has their own idea of this dress code.
    • Each will elaborate their ideas of what the student should wear before each project presentation.
