Scott 2 Guidance and Counseling Services are the guides that help students navigate their educational path to success. Our team of professionally trainedschool counselors can provide resources to help prepare students for the future.

Scottsburg High School counseling program has received the Gold Star & Ramp School Counseling Awards. Schools that have obtained the Indiana Gold Star status have demonstrated that they have a comprehensive and accountableschool counseling and guidance program, aligned to Indiana School Counselor
and Student Standards, as well as national (ASCA) standards.

The primary goal of the department is to:

  • Help create a safe school environment where children can learn
  • Coordinate referrals to outside agencies
  • Help design interventions to enhance student success
  • Help parents, teachers, administrators in learning how to meet the needs of all students

Our high school counselors help students by:

  • Promoting positive attitudes among students toward self, family, peers and community
  • Assisting students in learning how school performance relates to future opportunities
  • Developing and delivering classroom guidance lessons that teach skills such as healthy decision making, resolving conflicts and respecting others
  • Working collaboratively with students, parents and teachers to identify and remove barriers to learning
  • Supporting students by teaching skills for achieving success
  • Counseling with students individually and in groups
  • Providing support during personal crisis

How does a student get to see a School Counselor?

  • Self-referral- they can ask to see a counselor for themselves.
  • Request of the counselor- a counselor may request to see a student.
  • Parent/caregiver referral - parents can call, email, or meet with a counselor to ask a counselor to see their student.
  • Principal, teacher, or other staff referral - if a staff member is concerned about a student, they may ask the counselor to see them.
  • Referral by friend(s) - sometimes friends worry about their friend and may want to help them by reaching out to the school counselor.

Students wishing to see a school counselor can sign up in the Counseling and Guidance Department at the reception desk.

We believe at SHS that every student has a right to access services provided by their school counselor. If a parent/caregiver does not want their student meeting with a counselor, they must inform the school principal. If the counselor feels they need to work with a student on an ongoing basis or in a small group, parents will be notified and asked permission. Permission can be withdrawn at any time by parent/caregiver request. Counseling and guidance services are available to all students.

Mr. Snowden has been a school social worker at SHS since February 2021. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from IUS and his Master’s in Social Work at IUPUI.  Professionally, Mr. Snowden has served many roles during his career such as being a therapist, program director, manager, supervisor, trainer, teacher, and pastor.  He enjoys working on projects outdoors on good weather days.  He also likes to walk with his wife and labradoodle in the evenings.  Family time is very important to him as he and his wife spend time together with their four daughters. Their favorite thing to do is to take trips together and stream shows to watch for home entertainment.
